In the ArcGISР’В 8.3 release, ArcEditor and ArcInfo users will be given new tools to define, validate, and maintain topology in a geodatabase. While build and clean operations will continue to be a key part of the ArcInfo user's repertoire for years to come, the geodatabase data model allows a new approach for topology. To date, topology has been inexorably linked to the ArcInfo coverage data model.

This article introduces geodatabase topology and describes a simplified parcel data model. The introduction of the new ArcGIS geodatabase provides an opportunity to expand what topology means for GIS users as well as the possible uses it has in modeling spatial data. Until release 8.3, topology was a feature of the ArcInfo coverage data model.

One of the primary objectives of the ArcGIS release is to add full topology to the geodatabase. In ArcGIS, the validate topology capability will ensure data integrity by validating the features of a geodatabase against a set of topology rules. At ArcGISР’В 8.3, Esri introduced a new suite of editing tools necessary to construct and maintain user-defined topological relationships with a geodatabase. In the ArcInfo 'coverage' model, hundreds of thousands of GIS users worldwide learned the benefits of topology by performing the build and clean operations on their databases. Once they are exported, the feature classes can be accessed using any license level of ArcGIS. All information associated with the errors and exceptions, such as the features referenced by the error or exception, are exported. The topology will not contain any feature classes or rules.Р”В®xports the errors from a geodatabase topology to the target geodatabase. If you have data in your feature classes, you can choose Yes.Р”В¬reates a topology. You will be asked if you would like to validate your topology in your feature dataset now. You have now added the new topology to your feature dataset.

Add the series of topology rules that help you structure the spatial relationships between features and to control and validate how features share Geometry.

The default z-tolerance value is the same default value as the x,y tolerance (0.001 meter in real-world units). The z-tolerance helps process this information correctly during validation and clustering operations. However, only their x,y vertices are colocated, not their z-value or height. For example, two adjacent features of different heights might share a common edge between them. The z-tolerance is used to distinguish the z-height, or elevation of vertices within the tolerance of one another. If one or more of your feature classes contain coordinate z-values, click Z Properties to set the z-ranks.

Set the Coordinate Accuracy ranks for each feature class in the topology.

You will be shown a list of all the feature classes in your Feature Dataset.

Next, choose the Feature Classes that will participate in the Topology.

A good default value is 0.001 meters or its equivalent in the units of your spatial reference (for example, 0.003281 feet if your units are in feet or 0.0000000556 degrees if your units are in latitude-longitude as decimal degrees). (The default value will be set to the x,y tolerance of the feature dataset).

Name the new Topology and specify the Cluster tolerance.

Right-click the Feature Dataset to which you want to add a topology, Point to New, then click Topology.
